Easy DIY Fall Wreath

Last weekend we pulled out our one tub of Halloween and fall decor. I’m definitely more of a minimalist when decorating for holidays, though we usually supplement with some natural elements like plants and garlands. I don’t have any fall wreaths and the large double doors on the front of our house were begging to be decorated, so this weekend I put together two easy wreaths. Each DIY fall wreath took about 30 minutes to make. I spent $60 on supplies for the two and still have ribbon and leaves leftover. All the nice pre-made wreaths I saw were much more expensive so this is a great way to decorate without spending a lot!

I bought all the supplies for the DIY fall wreaths at Hobby Lobby. Their fall stuff was 40% off when I went last weekend and I used a 40% off coupon on one of the wreath forms. The supply list is for one fall wreath. If you want to make two, buy an extra wreath form, another bunch of orange fall foliage, and another pumpkin pick. *Affiliate links included

Supplies

Step 1

Gather the supplies for your DIY fall wreath. Use wire cutters or tin snips (better for thicker branches) to cut off each branch from the faux foliage stems to make smaller picks.

Step 2

Prepare your wreath form by making sure all the pipe cleaners are sticking up and separated (Note: If you have access to orange pipe cleaners, I’d recommend switching out the green for orange). Take the 15′ of burlap ribbon and begin loosely tying it to the inner circle. You’ll want to use about 6.5′ on the inner circle and the rest on the outer circle. Work in a counter clockwise direction. The loops of burlap between each tie should be approximately equal but don’t worry about being super exact. Tuck the end under the burlap in the first tie. When you’re happy with the spacing of the burlap loops, twist the pipe cleaners tightly to secure.

Step 3

Now tie the burlap along the outer edge of your DIY fall wreath. Work in a clockwise direction. The loops should stick out about the same as the ones on the inner edge. You may have some extra burlap left over. You can just tuck that into the back of the wreath at the end. When you’re done, twist the ties tightly and tuck into the center.

Step 4

Loosely tuck the orange leaf picks into the wreath to test out spacing. Work from the bottom center of the wreath to the top, tucking each pick behind the previous one. When you’re happy with the arrangement, stick each pick through the double wire of the inner circle and twist the pipe cleaner ties around the pick to secure. Do the same with the pumpkin pick which should sit a bit off to one side.

Step 5

Remove the maple leaves from the branches. Tuck one into each pipe cleaner tie to help hide it. The leaves should angle slightly outward to add some more dimension to the wreath. Reposition the burlap loops and tuck any extra burlap ribbon into the back of the wreath.

Step 6

Now we’re going to add a big bow to the top of the wreath. Cut a 6′ piece of plaid, wire-edged ribbon and fold in half. Adjust so one side is a few inches longer than the other. Tuck the loop of ribbon through the center of the wreath, behind, and up over the top. Thread the ribbon ends though the loop and tighten.

Now take the short piece of ribbon and form a loop. Wrap the longer piece around the front and up through the center. This makes a perfect bow that won’t twist sideways (thanks Mom for teaching me that!). Fold the ends of the ribbon in half and cut at an angle to finish the ends. Put a little wave in the ribbon to make it pretty 🙂

Step 7

Hang your wreath and enjoy! Because our doors are glass, I added a small command hook on the top of the door on the inside. Then I threaded a small ribbon through the back of the wreath bow and tied it to the command hook. You can also use a wreath hanger or put a hook on the outside of your door.

If you have two wreaths next to each other, it’s helpful to mirror the pumpkin picks so they look more intentional (and custom).
