Quick Fix for Doorless Bathrooms

Is there anything about your current house that makes you scratch your head and wonder who in the world thought that would be a good idea?? If you have a newer house, that thing might be a bathroom without a door. I know they’re super popular right now, but geez, can a girl get some privacy around here? Since another holiday is coming up, here’s a quick fix for doorless bathrooms so there aren’t any “incidents” when your houseguests arrive.

The fastest way I’ve found to deal with the issue is to use a tension rod and mount a curtain. Be sure to buy a 96″ curtain and put the rod up near the ceiling. I’m using a lightweight curtain which works well for this. If you don’t have walls on either side, mount a normal curtain rod on whatever side makes sense to you. Let’s look at what I’m working with after the fix:

Can we just take a second and talk about this bathroom layout? If you look through this doorway you look straight into the shower! Really now. Thankfully the toilet is in it’s own room with a door.

Anyway, back to the solution. I put the curtain up right away, but it was figuring out how to hold it open when I didn’t need it that was the tricky part. A regular curtain holdback didn’t work because I couldn’t put it on the correct wall for it to be positioned in the right way. I purchased a double wall hook but then couldn’t find a tieback that was made for constant hooking and unhooking. I shouldn’t admit this, but for awhile we just used a rubber band. It totally worked but it definitely wasn’t very pretty.

Finally, I found some decorative hoops for jewelry making simply called “connectors” at Joann’s. This was what I’d been looking for! Then I bought a pretty string of beads and used heavy duty thread to string the beads and tie them to the connectors. Be sure to leave a little extra string so the beads are free to move around. That will ensure they hang correctly.

Here’s what the double hook looks like on the wall. One connector goes over each hook when you need the curtain pulled back. When you want it closed, just remove one end and leave the beads handing from the other hook.

Now when someone needs a little privacy in the bathroom, they can simply unhook the curtain. A super easy solution to the annoying problem of an open concept bathroom.

If you’re going to do this, be sure to leave the curtain open when you’re not using the bathroom! Otherwise moisture can build up and cause issues. Now get that curtain up and enjoy your shower in peace!
